At Energy Grant Finder we are committed to ensuring as many North East Homeowners, Landlords and Tenants know about the Government backed ECO4 scheme which enables qualifying households to take advantage of Government backed grants to install and upgrade inefficient heating systems as well as installing energy efficiency measures.
In the recently published The Mouldy Nation Report 2025, during 2019/20 – 2023/24 there had been a total of 16,098 complaints to the Local authority and housing associations in relation to damp and mould.
Sadly, this represents a 16.87% increase compared to previous financial years.
This disappointing news lands as the Government has published guidance on understanding and addressing the risks of damp and mould in UK homes and the findings represent serious risk to homeowners and tenants who struggle with fuel poverty, driven by inefficient and outdated heating systems.
Almost all respondents to the Mouldy Nation Report reported struggling with fuel costs and this comes as little surprise with corresponding BBC reports that the UK has the highest energy prices in Europe and in comparable economic countries outside of the EU.
The cost of Mould and Damp in homes is high. With Mould and Damp primarily affecting the respiratory system, this can have a devastating impact on the health of homeowners and tenants and lead to fatal consequences.
The main action that residents in this situation can take is to apply for the Government Backed ECO4 scheme which enables a wide range of qualifying households to receive free home improvements which can have a huge and lasting impact on fuel efficiency and reducing the cost of home heating.
The current ECO4 scheme covers initiatives such as:
Free Central Heating upgrades
New Boilers
Loft Insulation
Cavity wall insulation and much more
Claimants do not need to own their own homes. Tenants with the relevant landlord permissions can also apply alongside qualifying homeowners.
Nasser Moffat of the Energy Grant Finder said “it’s clear that damp and mould poses a real risk to health of those suffering from underlying health conditions, but also health individuals who may not realise the risk that this toxic environment can pose. Fuel poverty is the main cause of mould in the home and here at Energy Grant Finder we are working hard to reach people in this position”
