Warmer Homes Local Grant

Helping create warmer homes with funding from the Government.

What is The Warm Homes Local Grant?

The Warm Homes Local Grant is available to eligible individuals to make their home warmer.

The Warm Homes Local Grant represents a step forward in the UK Government’s commitment to tackling fuel poverty and reaching its ambitious net zero emissions target. This targeted government initiative, launched across England in September 2024, is specifically designed to enhance energy efficiency measures within lower income households. By providing crucial funding and support, the scheme aims to alleviate the burden of high energy costs on vulnerable residents while simultaneously contributing to a greener future. This grant is a key part of the UK Government’s overarching Warm Homes Plan, a comprehensive strategy with the ambitious goal of upgrading the energy performance of five million homes over five years. Recognising the dual issues of social welfare and environmental responsibility, the Warm Homes Plan demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating warmer, healthier homes and accelerating the nation’s transition towards net zero emissions by 2050. The Warm Homes Local Grant, with its focused approach on supporting lower income households, plays a vital role in ensuring that the benefits of this national scheme reach those who need them most.

Who is Eligible for the Warmer Homes Local Grant?

Eligible Properties

To qualify for the scheme, a property must be located in England and be privately owned, whether occupied by the owner or within the private rental market. It is notable that park homes may also be eligible, should they meet specific criteria. Crucially, the property must currently possess an EPC rating between D and G, which means a need for energy efficiency upgrades. Importantly, the scheme is inclusive of all fuel types, ensuring that homes both connected to and independent of the gas grid can benefit from the available support.

Household Eligibility for the Warmer Homes Local Grant

To be eligible for support under the Warmer Homes Local Grant, households must meet at least one of several criteria which identify those most in need. This includes those classified as low income or currently receiving specific means tested benefits. Additionally, households with a gross annual income below £36,000 or a post housing cost income of £20,000 or less are also eligible. Finally, residents living within postcodes that automatically qualify based on the grant’s specific guidelines are also able to participate in the scheme.

Landlord Eligibility for the Warmer Homes Local Grant

Private landlords are also eligible to apply for this grant, albeit under specific terms. While full funding is available for upgrades to their initial property, a 50% contribution towards the costs is required for any subsequent properties within their portfolio. Additionally, the total amount of subsidies received by a single landlord across all their properties, encompassing any previous grants or subsidies, must not exceed £315,000. As a condition of receiving the grant, landlords are also required to share the details of the properties receiving upgrades on a central database.

Ineligible Properties

Certain types of properties are excluded from eligibility for the Warm Homes Local Grant. These include social housing, with the exception of specific, limited in fill developments. Additionally, newly constructed or self built homes that have not yet been occupied are not eligible for the scheme. Finally, properties that already possess an EPC rating of A to C, indicating they already meet higher energy efficiency standards, are also not eligible for this particular grant.

What Upgrades does the Warmer Homes Local Grant

The Warm Homes Local Grant supports a range of energy performance upgrades aimed at improving the efficiency of eligible properties. These include insulation measures for walls, roofs, and floors, designed to significantly reduce heat loss. The installation of solar photovoltaic panels is also supported, enabling households to generate their own renewable energy. Furthermore, the grant facilitates the adoption of low carbon heating solutions, such as air source heat pumps, which extract heat from the external air to provide an environmentally friendly heating alternative.

Why is the Warmer Homes Local Grant available?

By upgrading lower income homes across the UK to an EPC Band C by the target year of 2030, big steps forward can be made in easing the widespread issue of fuel poverty. This crucial mission will simultaneously contribute substantially to the nation’s overarching Net Zero 2050 goal through a tangible reduction in carbon emissions from the residential sector. Not only that, but these energy efficiency improvements will directly translate into enhanced living conditions for tenants, providing warmer, healthier homes while demonstrably lowering their energy expenditure, thereby enabling greater financial wellbeing.
